Those of you have seen me talking about politics here know that I view Trump and Republicans... less than favorably . But, I’m willing to give credit where credit is due. Someone at the White House managed to get a bunch of experts together and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that is genuinely gradual and comprehensive. It has multiple phases, lots of milestones, and looks for all the world like the product of people who know things about stuff. It’s also named with a suitable Trumpism that ends with “again,” but who cares?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
So, when you are confronted with crazed Trump supporters pushing to end social distancing...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Share this plan with them. Seriously. Ask them if their state has achieved the milestones laid out by President Trump to reopen.
Maybe this will have the perverse effect of reinforcing their belief that Trump is a good president who is competently handling the pandemic, which he most assuredly is not, but at least maybe they’ll listen to reason presented to them as the product of Trump himself.
Getting them to follow social distancing guidelines is more important, and it’s unlikely these true believers are flip-able anyway. But this plan gives as good a chance of anything to convince them to follow the public health experts’ recommendations.

It sounds good but isn’t. The virus is still here. This can only work if you can test and contact trace everyone. We don’t have the tests or personnel.
He gives no timelines and puts all the responsibility on the states with a plan that is otherwise
obvious. The states were going to do pretty much this without him acting know-it-all.
This is
simply so that he can shift
blame from himself
onto
the governors when cases spike again. Or blame them for keeping their states closed instead of following his plan.

Yes sir these are solid guidelines. And in an absence of testing, and many states not yet on the downhill, mean zero at this moment.

Nah. It’s guidance only, so governors still get to do whatever. Wording purposely all mealy mouthed vagueness - “should” and “strongly consider’ are non-binding. Must in there rarely, but at least it is meaningful. “Within 14 days” is dumb considering can take up to that long to show symptoms. Should be after 14 days IMO. Also testing availability is still low, results still are too slow, accuracy is too low (both + and -), and what’s the availability of the antibody test?
1. MUST This word, or the terms "REQUIRED" or "SHALL", mean that the definition is an absolute requirement of the
speci
fication.
2. MUST NOT This phrase, or the phrase "SHALL NOT", mean that the definition is an absolute prohibition of the specification.
3. SHOULD This word, or the adjective "RECOMMENDED", mean that there may exist valid reasons in particular circumstances to ignore a particular item, but the full implications must be understood and carefully weighed before choosing a different course.
4. SHOULD NOT This phrase, or the phrase "NOT RECOMMENDED" mean that there may exist valid reasons in particular circumstances when the particular behavior is acceptable or even useful, but the full implications should be understood and the case carefully weighed before implementing any behavior described with this label.

They put out this stuff while the adults are in the room. Once they leave Trump jumps on Twitter and spouts this shit
“LIBERATE MICHIGAN!” and “LIBERATE VIRGINIA, and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege!”
He just can’t resist it. He can not think rationally. He just can’t.

It was a short meeting. He dispatched Jared and Ivanka to go read a New York Times and fine out what the governors were already doing, then had Mr. Mnuchin change enough words so that the web based plagiarism checker wouldn’t get triggered.

I hate to defend this fuckhead, and I’m not defending him, but it says contact tracing right here.
I totally get what you’re saying about blame shifting. But this plan is a genuinely useful thing to show Trump supporters. If they push to reopen too soon, ask them if their state has achieved the milestones, and watch their heads explode.

I know it’s guidance only. Testing availability is a milestone here.
But the fact it comes from DJT is exactly why this is good to show Trump supporters.
They might *claim* milestones have been met but we know they haven’t. It’s an opening to get them to think rationally, for a change.

Superficially it all sounds good. There’s no substance. You can say “We will test”. There are way too few testing kits available
. Still.
You can say “There will be contact tracing”. We have nowhere near the personnel or equipment to do it.
oh - you

idea that it might

his irresponsible tweet to “Liberate”.

My point is, these requirements including the contact tracing need to be fulfilled before proceeding to the next phase. This is laid out like a stage gated project management document. It’s a checklist , not a timeline.
I totally agree with you that we need this shit before we reopen anything. But this document with Donnie’s name on it is likely the only thing the TDS sufferers will listen to.

It’s kinda like giving NASA a directive to land humans on Mars with
a timeline of milestones to reach.
It sounds very nice and looks rational and thought out
. And then cut their budget and personnel.

Right, I get it.
But we have a very real problem of Trump supporters not paying attention to science or acknowledging the things that need to be in place before we can safely go resume something resembling normal activity.
If we share with them knowledgeable articles from scientists or any good media source that they will immediately attack as the fake news lamestream media, we’ll get nowhere. If on the other hand we say, hey look at this check list your boy Donnie put out, has your state fulfilled these requirements, they may very well be like, oh shit, actually no, we gotta chill at home, nevermind about storming the state capitol.

I know, fuck his piece of shit ass.
But we got his supporters chomping at the bit to send everybody back out in public, and you and I both know if we show them info from scientists or respected media sources they’ll attack. Show them Donnie’s own checklist about Reopening America Again and ask them if their state checks the boxes, we just might get them to pay attention.
Public health progress above politics.

yeah, I wasn’t disagreeing that the guidelines aren’t sensible. Just that the motivation behind them is extremely suspect given what we know of the Moron-in-chief.
You may be less cynical / less tired than I am. Maybe some of his base with a few brain cells will indeed listen to you.
I’m not hopeful given M-I-C is tweeting “Liberate the states” at the same time he released the guidelines.

It’s like the perfect weapon to get Trumpkins to acknowledge we’re a long way away from being ready to go reopen shit.

All he knows and cares about is that the governors of Michigan and Virginia are Democrats. He doesn’t give a flying fuck about public health. There were similar protests in Idaho but did Donny say anything about liberating them? Fuck no. His moronic followers will not care what he said about steps to open things up. They will only hear him telling them to arm themselves and fight for liberty because that’s what they want to do. They masturbate to fantasies like that.

I have just as little faith in his supporters as you. But if there’s even a chance to get them to pay attention to shit that jives with what the public health experts are saying, it’s worth trying. And this website is eleventy billion times better than the nonsense Cheeto McFuckface spews in his propaganda “briefings.”
Set your expectations suitably low and hope for the best. They ain't listening to reason. But if they see it on whitehouse.gov, maaaaaybe they'll pay attention.

I know, it’s insane to give these fuckwads credit for anything. But the most important thing right now is tamping down these crazies from trying to reopen shit too soon. You and I know full well that if we share with them good information from the WaPo or NYT or some academic study they’re going to attack the source and disregard the message entirely. And yet, in the middle of all the horrible tweets and briefings, lo and behold, somebody in the WH managed to put sensible real public health shit on whitehouse.gov.
“Lookie here what DJT's folks put up" is a powerful-ass message to share with people who are predisposed to ignore real information.

I’m glad I live in a mostly first world state. The governor here even had a tweet retort to 45's impotent bluster.
If only we could allow the deplorables (let’s face it, she was right) to open things early, drag themselves down, but not harm sane society.
I just hope the Ds save every word and soundbite from this mess, and use it when needed it - it will be needed soon.

Here in Maryland we have a moderate Republican governor in Larry Hogan in spite of being a deep blue state. This state is open to GOP governors because there’s a blue supermajority in the legislature and we have ridiculously overcomplicated bureaucracy. Throwing a moderate GOP governor in there as a check on the bureaucracy ain’t the worst thing in the world. Hogan is chairman of the National Governors Association and has no problem calling out Trump’s bullshit. I voted for his opponent, but for the most part I’m extremely happy with Hogan’s competent handling of this situation. My dyed in the wool Democrat parents both voted for him and I ain’t even mad at them about it.

That’s the problem today. There is such a thing as a reasonable palatable Republican - they existed for generations. Unfortunately now, they are drowned out by the cult.
In the PNW they are either barely-disguised Nazis, or of the trickle-down bent who are offended by anything “progressive” like universal access to medical care.

I tried going to the gym right before the lockdowns started in here in Maryland. I knew it was risky. I saw another dude there grab each plate he needed with a paper towel and tried to follow suit. I quickly got tired of it because I touch so many damn plates, dumbbells, machines and cable attachments during a workout. It was way too much for my OCD to tolerate. But, OCD or not, it goes to show exactly why gyms are all closed now. It would be quite impossible for every person in the gym to thoroughly sanitize everything they touch such what it's ready for the next person who picks up that item.

To be clear, most Republicans’ beliefs are objectively abhorrent and wrong, and I will fight those beliefs until the day I die. The opposite opinion of this is not equally valid. Their relative level of intelligence is no excuse for these beliefs, and in fact the more intelligent someone is the less of an excuse they have for believing the Republican platform is good.
Them doing something right for a change doesn’t mean I’ve suddenly softened my correct stance against these beliefs in the slightest.
And oh by the way this plan is far from perfect, because it talks about opening up gyms way too early, thanks to the owners of big corporate chain gyms getting in Fuckwad’s ear. I’m a huge gym rat and the idea of gyms opening up early in the game is terrifying. I touch countless surfaces in a workout and it’s simply impossible for a gym full of people to constantly sanitize everything they’re touching.
The point here is solely that because Trump supporters usually don’t listen to reasonable information because their cult of personality is troubled when presented with facts that show they’re wrong, so they attack the source of the information. Thus, when presented with mostly good information from a source they’re unlikely to fight, they just might pay attention to the public health shit we need everyone to be doing, instead of robble robbling about I WANT MAH FREEDOM I’M NOT LISTENING TO WHAT A BUNCH OF EGGHEADS SAY IN THE LAMESTREAM FAKE NEWS MEDIA.

Textured Soy Protein
> brianbrannon
04/24/2020 at 13:49 | 0 |
I know exactly what objective means. Governing based on beliefs and making decisions that fly in the face of facts, logic, and ethics is objectively wrong. Believing that everything is debatable because facts can be invented is incorrect. Republicans *LOVE* saying bullshit then playing the agree to disagree card, as if each side of the disagreement is equally valid because it’s all a bunch of opinions and each side has its merits.
You can disagree all you like. Doesn't make you correct.
